Best Funeral Director: Lorne Adams

Oct 29, 2018 | 12:30 PM

Lorne Adams, funeral director at Beau ‘Lac’ Funeral Home in Prince Albert, says he found his calling when he changed careers from an STC bus manager to a funeral director.

He has lived in Prince Albert his whole life and says he feels closer to the community through his role helping people grieve. Adams said, “For me, it’s nice because I know most of the families pretty well. When they first come in I make sure I given them a hug and make sure everyone is relaxed and comfortable.”

Adams’ has always been a people person and has maintained strong relationships throughout Prince Albert and the surrounding area. “You have to be a good listener and speak from your heart, which I do,” said Adams. “I take pride in taking care of the families and treating everyone the way that I’d want to be treated. I expect support, compassion and a comfortable environment and that’s what I provide. I like helping people.”

His commitment to those who are grieving extends long past the time for arrangements. He’ll call families weeks after the service to check in and see how everyone is doing. “You spend so much time with them before the service and then that’s it, so it’s nice to phone and see how they’re doing,” Adams said. “Everybody’s different in how they handle grief – and for how long. It’s nice knowing there’s someone there to listen.”

Being voted Prince Albert’s best funeral director for 2018, has been a humbling experience for Adams and he makes sure to let everyone know he doesn’t do it alone. “You can’t do it yourself,” Adams adds.  “It’s a humbling award and you can’t do it without good staff.”

Beau ‘Lac’ has several part-time staff helping with services, two on-call workers for quick and efficient service at any time of the day or night. Their Pre-Arrangement and Family Service Specialist is Murray Acorn. The Prince Albert location Co-owner/Manager is Marianne Turcotte.

“No one can do it alone, whether it’s a grieving family or us working to make their day as special as it should be,” Adams said. “Without the larger team our intimate and comfortable services wouldn’t be possible.”

Interestingly, Adams says his best training at being a funeral director was handling the arrangements for his own parents and then recently, his sister. “When you make the arrangements for your parents, or family member, you get it. You know what other families are going through and it’s the best training I’ve had for this job.” Said Adams.  “About a month ago, I lost my sister, it’s sort of good to be on the other side – being at ICU daily, and understanding what families go through. I was able to take care of the service and until you lose somebody, you’d don’t really get it.”

Beau ‘Lac’ Funeral Home offers intimate services to best remember your loved ones.
