Yogi Hammond, 2018 Best Pharmacist

Best Pharmacist : Dr. Yogi Hammond

Oct 1, 2018 | 2:31 PM

Being a great pharmacist is about more than dispensing drugs.

Dr. Yogi Hammond is one of only a handful of clinically trained pharmacists in the province, which means she can help diagnose a patient’s needs as well as prescribe which drugs many help the best. She was thrilled when she heard the news she was voted Prince Albert’s best pharmacist.

“It’s great that people recognize my work and the training that I have as well and being nominated just shows I have achieved what I wanted to in terms of providing the best clinical care for patients,” she said.

Hammond has more than 20 years of experience as a pharmacist, beginning her journey towards providing compassionate service in South Africa.  She completed her pharmacy training in 1993 and worked in a community health centre/day hospital until 1999.  In 2008, despite numerous job offers in the United States, she accompanied her husband Dr. Cecil Hammond to Saskatchewan, where she practiced for five years and went on to manage and co-own various pharmacies around Prince Albert, including Hammond’s Pharmacy which just celebrated its second year anniversary.

At Hammond’s Pharmacy you won’t just be receiving medication, you’ll also be treated with care as Dr. Yogi Hammond assists with your diagnosis

“I am quite happy with what I’ve set up. It was something that I was a bit skeptical about initially but it worked out,” she said.

From 2013 to 2015 Hammond completed her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Colorado, and graduated with what’s known as a PharmD. She was also inducted into the Rho Chi Honor Society, a prestigious academic society reflecting her hard worth ethic and incredible talent. Hammond said Hammond’s Pharmacy is all about a comprehensive patient care plan, including diagnosis and dispensing.

‘If you have an idea of what is going on with a patient, you are kind of able to screen out patients and then say this needs further investigation,” she said.

With the numerous other pharmacies and doctors in the area, Hammond said her goal is to turn the south end of downtown into a nexus for health care, where patients can have all of their needs treated without having to travel across town to do so. Moving forward she said she would like to attract more pharmacists and technicians to their pharmacy.

Dr. Yogi Hammond has decades of experience, having started her career in South Africa before coming to Saskatchewan

“And be able to work maybe with the university and get new students that are training as PharmD’s to come and work here and get that kind of experience,” she said.
