Best Coffee : McDonalds

Prince Albert’s Best Coffee is served by a pair of local business owners with long roots in the community.

Ken and Jan Malenfant were born and raised in Prince Albert. After working in the trucking and heavy equipment and banking worlds, they decided to make a move and pursue careers with McDonalds nine years ago.

They’re now running an operation which garnered Best of the Best nominations and awards in the Best Coffee, Best Fast Food, Best Fries and Best Cheap Eats categories. Ken noted the biggest driver for their success is the people who handle the day to day operations.

Building on its strong coffee credentials, McCafé has expanded into grocery aisles and airplanes, evolved to include a McCafé Bakery menu and launched standalone cafés in Toronto with an expanded menu and now brought on board WestJet flights.

“The number one asset for us is our people, I think that’s what we take home with us every night: we get to work with a great bunch of people,” Ken said. “From our top leadership, down to our newest hires, we take a lot of pride in training some of the young kids for their first jobs.”

He said McDonald’s coffee has been a big part of their recent success. The restaurant has turned into a coffee destination for thousands of people in the Gateway to the North. He said 10 years ago, the company switched the beans and brew for their java, along with a plethora of improvements to equipment and cups to serve their brew in.

The McCafé brand has established itself as a leading player in the Canadian quick-service coffee landscape with its Premium Roast coffee, surprising and delighting guests with each cup.

The team has worked tirelessly to teach their staff how to serve the best cup of coffee possible every time. Ken said the customers have come to expect and return for that level of service.

“It’s obviously worked. We continue to grow our coffee numbers here,” Ken said. “People tell us ‘we just love your coffee, it’s great, we don’t drink anything else anymore.’”

Jan also attributed their success in the coffee market to hosting free coffee events periodically. The events were hosted in part to attract new customers and encourage people to try McCafé products, but also to give back to existing customers who keep the business alive.

“We’re not satisfied with where we’re at; we still want to continue to grow our numbers, but we’re pretty happy with where we’re at,” Ken said. “Winning best coffee in the city, we take some pride in that… you just don’t know it until you hear it.”

McCafé products also feature a sticker promotion, where if you fill up a card with stickers, you’re eligible for a free medium coffee product. The menu also features seasonal flavours, like caramel pumpkin spice lattes. “They’re aggressive that way… with McDonald’s, we try a lot of things, we’re trendsetters that way,” Ken said.
