MIX 101 FM is Saskatchewan’s rock super station and Lew Harrison is the personality behind it.
Listeners of MIX 101 FM have been waking up to Lew and his morning show pretty much since the station first began in 2001. The station first hit airways in June 2001 and Lew joined the station later in September.
“Basically, they said here is MIX make a morning show,” said Lew. “And so I said ‘okay I have never done this before, so what do I do?’ And they said ‘have fun with it.’”
“So that is what I do. I have fun with it.”
Lew began his career in radio in 1992 at Sun 102 FM in Saskatoon. Soon after, he moved to Prince Albert and until 2001 he was the evening guy, senior swing guy and the afternoon guy on 900 CKBI.
Lew said his inspiration to get involved with radio began in his early twenties. He said he was a truck driver and naturally spent a lot of time listening to the radio while on the road.
“I would tune in and they sounded like they were having so much fun,” said Lew. “And I thought ‘gee that would be a lot of fun to get to have that job and get paid for having fun and sitting there laughing.’”
Lew was eventually encouraged by friends to give radio a go.
“One of my friends said ‘you have a really nice voice, you should be on the radio’ and I kind of laughed her off, but then it started to eat at me for a while and I though maybe, maybe there is something to it and now here I am,” he said.
MIX 101 FM is an adult rock station and listeners can tune with Lew, and now Jodie as well, every weekday morning from 6-9 a.m. on the MIX Morning Show. Lew and Jodie plus Drew Wilson and Nigel Maxwell provide a morning of laughter and surprise conversations.
“You never know what is going to happen, because we don’t either we just make it up as we go,” said Lew. “It’s pent up silliness just waiting to happen.”
“We turn on the mic and just start talking about whatever and it just turns into this huge conversation with friends who are just having fun,” he added.
MIX 101 FM promotes a variety of contests on the station including the Rock Machine, the MIX Chicks Calendar, Mother’s Day Cake Dive and Diaper Dash.
“We have sent people to see concerts in Edmonton or Toronto. We have sent people to Hawaii, Los Angeles, New York, Mexico and Jamaica, all sorts of places. We have probably sent more listeners on trips then any of our other stations,” said Lew.
“We have some of the coolest contests again because we don’t take ourselves too seriously; our contests are just fun.”
Lew mentioned that he may be the one that gets to play with the music and have the fun behind the mic but he wants to thank his listeners for paying attention because if it were not for them he would not have a show.
“I want to give the listeners props because MIX has very cool listeners that are very open minded and allow me to continue because they seem to like me, so they allow me to continue to go and have fun every day,” he said.
“Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love to do.”
