The suspect was charged in connection to a break and enter early Wednesday morning in the 1100 block of Seventh St. E. According to police a resident woke up to the sound of breaking glass and called 911. Two other nearby residents also reported damage to their homes.

According to the prosecution at Thursday’s hearing, the accused entered the home by smashing a window with his hand. When the homeowner came downstairs to check on the noise, the accused was found standing in the entranceway with blood dripping from his hands. He allegedly told the homeowner he needed help for his children, and confessed to smashing the windows at two other homes in the area.

Police arrived minutes later, and arrested the man without incident. Both a knife and a crowbar were seized by police. The man’s lawyer said he was scared and seeking shelter to hid from someone chasing him. Earlier that evening, the accused took his children to the fair.

Judge Lane said there were too many inconsistencies in the story and asked if the accused had just decided to go for a stroll with a crowbar after dropping his kids off. The accused has been scheduled to return to court Aug. 8.
