Survey shows food delivery drivers are taking a nibble

A survey in the U.S. gives some food for thought … or perhaps that should be some food for someone else’s thoughts.

CBS New York reports that a survey of several food delivery companies found a surprising, and somewhat unsettling 25 per cent of food take-out delivery drivers admitted to sampling some of the product before they handed it over to customers. And over 20 per cent of customers suspected as much.

In Prince Albert it’s not known just how often such temptation may afflict local food couriers but a local restauranter has heard of such things.

“I have heard on the street that delivery guys do do that,” Jen Kindzerksi, the owner/operator of Shananigan’s restaurant told paNOW. But she added delivery guys also get blamed when something is missing from an order when it was actually left off by kitchen staff. She has her own process for making it harder for things to go astray.

“ I always go a little further than just the container,” she said. “ I take tin foil and wrap it up tight in the shape of a swan, with the head and tail. There’s no way anyone is going to go in there.”

The local owner of a high-profile fast food chain in Prince Albert, who preferred not to be named, told paNOW he had not heard of issues with deliveries from his operations.

“We seal our bags with Skip The Dishes stickers and we’ve never had a complaint as of yet,” he said. “We take food safety very seriously and perhaps if delivery drivers had access to those stickers they could do something, but I’ve not heard anything like that.”

The survey cited by CBS New York included a number of food courier companies, but not Skip The Dishes. paNOW reached out to that company for their thoughts on the survey and to learn more about what they do to ensure meals destined for customers are not interfered with. However, they did not respond before our deadline.
