Sawchuk looks to defend longest running match play tournament

The 98th Annual Men’s Northern golf tournament is the longest-running match play event in Canada, and Tom Wormworth has played in almost half of them.

He’s played in 48 of the last 50 tournaments and will be out there again this year Aug. 3 to 5 at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

“It’s my highlight of the season,” Wormworth, who’s also one of the tournament’s co-chairs, said. “I had a wedding to go to about 20 years ago, I couldn’t miss the wedding. And a few years ago, I hurt my back and just couldn’t play.”

The history of the tournament dates back to the early days of the Prince Albert Golf Club when Hubert Cooke took over as the club’s professional.

“It started way back in the day with Hubert Cooke on a nine-hole golf course, extended later to 18 holes,” Wormworth said. “We just kept the tradition going. It’s one of the most popular tournaments in the province and we always get a strong field to our tournament.”

Prince Albert’s Cory Sawchuk will be back to defend his Northern title he won last year, defeating fellow P.A. golfer Danny Klughart in an exciting and back-and-forth final.

Wormworth said there are tons of other players that will be in the hunt for that trophy, like familiar P.A. locals in Martin Ring, Cory Selander and Greg Swenson, as well as Delisle’s Colin Coben, Saskatoon’s Brad Phelps and Martensville’s Luke Sheard.

“I spoke to Cory earlier this spring, and he’s really looking forward to coming back to play. And there’s lots of top competitors that will give him a good run for his money, that’s for sure.”
