Oct 4, 2016 | 2:00 PM

For another year, the Art Hauser center will be filled with the thunder of drums, the jingle of bells and the flashing colours of ribbons.

The 18th annual Northern Lights Thanksgiving powwow will take place over the coming long weekend. According to the Northern Lights Development Corporation’s website, the powwow is a showcase of First Nations culture, hospitality and traditions.

Registration is open at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with a 12 p.m. grand entry. The evening session will kick off at 7 p.m.

Saturday specials include women’s fancy shawl, men’s traditional, and men’s fancy bustle spotlight. Junior teen, junior adult, senior adult and golden age categories will be competing. The tiny tots category is set to be paid out daily.

Sunday’s grand entry is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Sunday will feature a drum contest with a $5,000 cash prize going to first place. An additional $8,800 in prizes will be awarded to drum groups placing second to seventh places. Sunday is also the women’s jingle dress special, and will feature a giveaway.

The Thanksgiving powwow is a family friendly event and there is a no tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs. The Prince Albert Police Service will be on site along with security and first aid.
