Prison staff member injured at hands of knife wielding inmate, says source

A staff member at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary is recovering, following an incident earlier this week involving a minimum security inmate, armed with a knife.

The incident happed Tuesday. A source close to the situation told paNOW the inmate was “higher than a kite” the night before and was scheduled to have a urinalysis test Tuesday morning, but did not show up.

The source said when the inmate was located he took off running, and several correctional officers chased after him. When a staff member, who hid behind a storage building, attempted to surprise the inmate, he was slashed with a knife. The cut to the staff member’s back was small, the source said.

The inmate was soon after brought down in the parking lot area by several correctional officers. The injured person was taken to hospital and received several stitches, but has since returned to work.

A spokesperson for the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) would not discuss the specifics of the incident but did confirm to paNOW a staff member was injured.

“The incident is not considered an attempted escape and was resolved quickly,” spokesperson Kelly Dae Dash said in her statement.

She added police have been contacted and will determine if criminal charges will be laid.

“CSC is examining this incident and will work collaboratively with the police during their investigation,” she said.
