Provincial Parks offer Saskatchewan Survivor Series courses

Those looking for more survival skill knowledge for the Saskatchewan backcountry would benefit from a course offered by the provincial parks.

The Saskatchewan Survivor Series will be offering courses on a range of subjects from building a shelter to identifying plants. The program is being offered at provincial parks across Saskatchewan this summer for the first time.

Nicky McLoughlin, manager of visitor experiences and public programming for Saskatchewan Provincial Parks, said by offering this education program they hope to empower people who come to the parks.

“We want our people, our visitors, our campers, to feel safe and we believe knowledge is power,” she said.

Other topics that will be covered include using a compass to navigate, fire safety techniques as well as how to be safe around animals. In total there are six separate course modules. McLoughlin explained the program caters to people with wide range of experiences and offers something for everyone.

“You may have camped before or you may not have and by taking part in these I think every level of understanding will take something back from this,” she said.

So far McLoughlin said they have been getting positive feedback from people about the program along with large numbers of people taking part. McLoughlin added she doesn’t see it going away anytime soon.

“I believe the success we’ve seen already is a clear indicator that we need to continue this program,” she said.
