The wheels on the bus are set to go ‘round now that the city has officially opened its transit transfer station.

After financial, logistical and weather delays, the joint-project between the federal, provincial and municipal governments finally opened Monday morning.

Saskatchewan’s Minister of Municipal Affairs Darryl Hickie, Prince Albert Randy Hoback, Mayor Jim Scarrow, transit committee members and other dignitaries were on hand.
City Transit Manager Keri Sexsmith said she was glad to finally see the project open after many delays.

The project not only included the construction of the transit station, but also included electronic fare boxes for buses, new lighting and a special-needs accessible bus, she said.

“All of these things have greatly improved the transit system in Prince Albert and the proof is in the numbers,” said Sexsmith, who noted that several of the improvements had been in use before the grand opening.

She said since the beginning of the year, there had been a two per cent increase in ridership, with growth expected throughout the year.

Sexsmith noted that the biggest improvement was the expanded capacity of the transit system. She said the city would be able to replace its shuttle-sized busses with 40-foot ones in the coming years.
