Fraud case on local First Nation moves forward

Two men from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation are facing fraud charges following a complaint made in 2006.

Melvin Napoleon Merasty and George Kevin Sewap have been charged after money was stolen from the bands treaty land entitlement fund.

The fund's trustees had been alerted by a band lawyer a year before that a $3.7 million trust account had allegedly been emptied before a band election.

Over the course of a four month period, 1,500 cheques were written on the fund account.
