The city has approved $2 million worth of work to get its Eco-Industrial Park underway.

Council voted to approve tenders for the park’s underground utilities and sewage systems.

Prince Albert’s director of public works Colin Innes said the work, which will begin immediately will allow the site to become a realistic destination for potential businesses.

“Your service is the first thing you want to do and get in the ground,” said Innes.

“This way it’s getting the site ready so they come along and, boom, they’re able to action their plans.”

He added that while the baseline infrastructure costs seem expensive at $2 million, the city had initially planned on spending $3 million, but tenders were less expensive than expected.

As well, the majority of the money comes from funding from other levels of government, said city manager Robert Cotterill.

The city’s director of economic development Joan Corneil said the city has hired a marketing firm to attract businesses to the park.

She said while nothing was definitive, there was interest from both within the province and the United States.

The 28-acre site is situated near the Prince Albert Airport. Preliminary plans have room for upwards of five separate businesses. The city says in its strategic plans that it hopes for such industries as biofuel producers and waste management systems, but currently, there are no definitive requirements.
