Heads hung low in Avonlea's town hall Sunday night as the community watched the Saskatchewan Roughriders suffer a tough Grey Cup loss.
Mayor Alex Getzlaf says it's too bad it had to end the way it did, referring to quarterback Darian Durant's interception.
“It was a great game actually, we just kind of sputtered in the third quarter, that really hurt us a lot. But hey, the sun's going to come up tomorrow and we're still Riderville and we still have the Riders,” said Getzlaf.
He said he got so nervous in the fourth quarter, he had to leave the hall.
“I had to go outside and have a smoke or two while the key plays were going on.”
Getzlaf says Avonlea will keep embracing their title of Riderville by painting a street green this spring and hanging up more signs around town.
“It just doesn't end because the season's over. We're still Riderville for another year so we're going to make the best of it.”
Getzlaf is Rider slotback Chris Getzlaf's uncle, and says his nephew and the Roughriders will actually be playing Avonlea's local hockey team in March.
