Northern reserve goes fishing for business

If all goes well, a new business venture could bring 40 to 50 jobs to a Northern Saskatchewan First Nation.

The Fond du Lac First Nation has expressed interest in a fish processing plant.

The band is working with a First Nations group out of New Brunswick.

“And the reason we went with an east coast fisheries group, is because they have access to an international market,” said Fond du Lac Chief, Napolean Mercredi.

“We are located very good here on Lake Athabasca — there are nearly two million pounds of fish in the surrounding lakes.”

Mercredi said he would like to get the ball rolling very soon.

Meanwhile plans for a fish processing plant near Prince Albert remain stalled.

President of the Cumberland House Fishermen's Co-op Lennard Morin said they need support from the provincial government before they can go ahead with the project.
