Lawsuit looks to reinstate Indian status

Jan 12, 2011 | 3:37 PM

As the federal government looks to reinstate Indian status to thousands of Canadians, a Regina based lawyer and his law firm are hoping that also comes with some pay back.

Tony Merchant has filed a class action lawsuit that could cost the government $2.7 billion in returned taxes.

Last month Parliament passed a bill extending Indian status to roughly 45 thousand people. The finding was that the Indian Act had been discriminatory, granting status the grandchildren of Indian men but not Indian women.
