Family doing all right after fire thanks to community members

Jan 24, 2011 | 11:00 AM

The community has stepped up to support a family who lost everything in a fire less than two week ago.

Don Bruce and his family lived in a mobile home just north of Prince Albert. Their home, including their family pets and their Christmas presents were all lost. Luckily no one was home at the time.

Lakeland Ford in Prince Albert started collecting donations for the family.

Since then community groups and members have been showing their generosity.

“Everybody has been just great and it’s been unbelievable for the support so far … lots of clothes and help form the community,” Bruce said.

Bruce lived in the mobile home with his daughter and two grand kids, one only a few months old. Bruce said that they have been given more than enough baby clothes.

Among the latest donations, the Prince Albert/Paddockwood division of the Elks and Royal Purple are giving $500 to each of the children to help replace some of their lost toys and Christmas presents.

At the moment the family has been split up and is staying in two different places. Bruce said they are still waiting to hear beck from their insurance.

“Hopefully within the next two to three weeks we’ll be all back together again. We’re just hoping that way anyways.”

Other than finding a place to call home, Bruce said the family basically isn’t in need of anything at the moment.

“Everybody’s got lots of clothes to wear and that’s kind of the main thing right now,” Bruce said

“People have wanted to give us bigger items but we’ve got no place to put them so there’s not really much sense in getting those yet.”

Bruce said he still sometimes breaks down but lately he and the family have been feeling a lot better.
