Saskatchewan-raised animator gets Oscar nod

Jan 28, 2011 | 5:30 AM

A Saskatchewan-raised animator is going to the Oscars because a film he worked on has earned a nomination. Yorkton-raised Paul Dutton served as the Animation Director for the film 'The Illusionist'.

And that film has been nominated in the Best Animated Feature category. He laughs about the moment he heard the film received an Oscar nod.

“My wife and I were watching the webstream of the announcements on my laptop, it was 6:30 in the morning and when we were announced, we both shouted! Very happy, woke the kids, scared the dog- but it was a good experience. It was absolutely fantastic,” Dutton said.

The filmmaker knows his movie faces stiff competition. Also nominated in the same category are box office hits 'Toy Story 3' and 'How to Train your Dragon.'
Dutton plans on attending the ceremony on February 27th in Hollywood. He now lives in Calgary and runs his own company, Rough House Animation.
