Building fire deemed suspicious

Feb 8, 2011 | 5:11 AM

A fire that gutted an abandoned home in the city’s West Flat has been deemed suspicious by the city’s joint task force for fire investigations.

“There was no credible heat source,” said Quentin Rowland, the Prince Albert Fire Department’s fire prevention officer.

“We ruled out electrical … it was vacated at the time so we ruled out any kind of accidental cooking or anything of that nature.

“At this point, we deemed it undetermined but it is suspicious.”

Fire fighters were called to the home in the early hours of Feb. 4. The fire was eventually extinguished, but caused significant damage to the building’s structure and almost totally destroyed the roof.

Because it was impossible to secure all the entrances, investigators deemed it too dangerous to leave standing and the building was demolished on Saturday.

The home was owned by New Beginnings Housing Co-operative but was vacant at the time of the fire and had been unoccupied for some time.

The investigation is now in the hands of the Prince Albert Police Service and continues.
