Libyan Canadians protest in Regina’s Victoria Park

A rally calling for the Canada and other world leaders to step in and remove Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was held in Victoria Park on Monday.

Many Libyans living in Regina braved the bitter cold to march for an end to Gadhafi’s 42 years of oppressive rule.

A domino effect seems to be taking hold of the region as many citizens have grown weary with the dictatorship rule and are now demanding democratic rule. Tunisia’s uprising gave power to Egypt’s push for democracy.

Now, Dr. Abdalla Muftah, a doctor in Regina, says these historical events have inspired the people in his birth land.

“We saw those two dictators fall down, so they have inspiration, Libyan people are always refusing this dictator, but he is brutal, so brutal he hangs people in the street so people were afraid, but now they have some courage and they rose up.”

Their courage has been duly tested. Reports say 200 protesters have been killed in the last five days.

Gadhafi is said to be using mercenary forces along with snipers to silence the protesters.

Dr. Muftah says the shooters are strictly aiming for heads and chests with the goal to kill not injure. He is shocked and disgusted that a leader can kill his own people so ruthlessly,

“In my opinion he is the most brutal dictator since Hitler.”

Dr. Muftah says a lot of people have been injured and they need medical attention and supplies immediately.
