Looking for volunteers to help in disaster response

Feb 23, 2011 | 10:55 AM

The Canadian Red Cross in Prince Albert is looking for volunteers to train in disaster response.

Kathy Christmann, the community outreach coordinator, said they're anticipating another wet spring and summer.

“We are expecting flooding throughout the province this spring and summer as a result of the heavy snowfall and rain. We anticipate we’re going to need a lot of people to help with the situation when and if it occurs,” said Christmann.

Last summer, many areas of the province were hit with severe rains and floods, which dubbed the season “the summer of storms”. However, Christmann said Prince Albert usually requires disaster assistance during the dry periods, as well.

“Since we are one of the main evacuation centres for the province, we also annually require volunteers to help with forest fire evacuations, too. This is an ongoing need for us. It’s not just a quick fix, it’s an ongoing need,” said Christmann.

Christmann said the Red Cross offers various disaster response courses to its volunteers.

“The Red Cross has numerous courses that they offer — everything from disaster management, to helping people at reception centres, etc. It’s an ongoing training. We do provide that to all our volunteers,” said Christmann.
