A citizen and a police dog are being credited with helping catch a robbery suspect in Prince Albert.

According to the Prince Albert Police Service, a man entered a convenience store in the 600 block of Branion Drive, just before 3 a.m. today, demanding cash.

The suspect threatened staff with a firearm, said Sgt. Kelly McLean.

“No firearm was displayed at the time, but staff complied with his request and a small amount of cash was handed over,” he said.

After the suspect fled the store, McLean said, a customer confronted the man and tipped officers off to his whereabouts.

“He was able to offer responding officers a description of this individual his last known location and the direction of travel.”

A police canine unit was deployed in the area and McLean said police dog ‘Ray’ located a man hiding in a yard in 600 block of 20th Street East.

The stolen cash was recoverd, however no weapon was ever located.

A man, 42, from the Mont Nebo district is charged with robbery, assault and uttering threats.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance this morning.
