UPDATE: Police keep Steele Bay on lockdown

Some residents of an area locked down by police are being allowed to leave, while others are being asked to stay indoors as a standoff continues in the south of the city.

Residents of Steele Bay should be staying in their homes, preferably in the basement, until the situation is resolved, said Sgt. Kelly McLean with the Prince Albert Police Service.

More than a dozen police squad cars, SUVs and unmarked vehicles cordoned off the area on Central Avenue from 31st Street East to the Casino parking lot and the area three blocks east.

We're currently dealing with one barricaded suspect, McLean said.

“There is a possibility of firearms in the residence.”

He said police went to the house after a complaint made yesterday at the residence around 9:30 p.m.

Police locked down the area around Steele Bay area, east of the Prince Albert Corrections Centre, early Tuesday morning, calling residents at 5 a.m.

One resident who resides on Steele Bay said he received the early morning call.

“There is a situation and so they are requesting that everyone that is here in the house should not leave the house,” he said the police told him.

“We’re not allowed to go anywhere, so it’s going to be a little bit of a problem. I don’t think I’ll be able to go to work today.”

While he said that he can see the police SWAT team, the resident told paNOW that he feels safe.

“I feel pretty safe, maybe it’s because I’m quite a few houses away,” he said.

A paNOW reporter on scene, said members of the SWAT team were gathered at the corner of Weir Road and Southwood Drive, but have since disappeared from view towards Steele Bay.

Last night, city crews were also called in to the cut the power to several street lights. The resident said he noticed the street lights go out at about 10 p.m.
