Kinsmen Park in running to be Canada’s greatest public space

Kinsmen Park in Prince Albert is being recognized as one of the greatest places in Canada, and is competing for a national award.

The park was submitted as a nomination by the city for the “Great Places in Canada” contest, under the “Great Public Spaces” category, and has made it to the final round.

Wes Holowachuk, with the City of Prince Albert, said he believes the park was selected to the finals because it met many of the contest’s criteria.

“It provides an opportunity for really anybody in the community, whether you like doing sports, or if you just like taking your dog for a walk, or if you like the events that are held there – the Canada Day celebrations. It just provides something for everybody, which is what I think was recognized,” said Wes Holowachuk.

Kinsmen Park is up against nine other locations, such as River Landing in Saskatoon, the Forks in Winnipeg and Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto.

While there is stiff competition, Holowachuk said he feels Kinsmen Park has a good chance of winning. However, even if it doesn’t, he said it’s a great honour to make it this far.

“There were a lot of nominees, so we feel that it’s a good recognition for the park and the city, so yeah, we’re excited about it,” said Holowachuk.

The contest is sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Planners, and there were two other categories, “Great Streets” and “Great Neighbourhoods.”

A judging panel will select the winners in each category, and the winners will be announced on May 16.
