YWCA Settlement Services – Helping Immigrants Adjust to Canadian Life – Needing Volunteers

May 4, 2011 | 12:50 PM

We are currently planning some fun activities for the spring and summer months. Our settlement counsellors are excited to take a trip out to the Vintage Power Museum in June. Thanks to Gordon Steele and Vintage Power Museum for graciously hosting us for the 3rd year now!

In June we will also be recognizing World Refugee Day. Every June 20th we acknowledge the plight of over 40 million displaced people in the world. As an agency who serves refugees every day we see the importance in recognizing their determination and reaffirming our decision to advocate for them.

And looking ahead to August we will be planning a summer fun day for our clients before everyone heads back to school.

Our Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) program is also preparing to launch NOW In August.

Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW) is filled with activities, information sessions, school and library tours for Immigrant and Refugee students and their parents.

The purpose of the week is to help new families feel comfortable with the Canadian school system and to help re-orientate other students and their parents so that transitioning back into school mode is a seamless and positive experience.

YWCA Settlement Services continues to look for volunteers to help in our programs.

Currently, we have three newcomer families from the Eastern most point of Africa who we’d like to find volunteers for.

The families have been in Canada 6 months, 2 months and 3 weeks.

They are Refugee families who have been displaced from their homes and have been patiently waiting to start a new chapter of their lives here in Canada.

Volunteers would be individuals or families who are interested in helping a new family settle into our community. This could be through coffee and conversation, taking them to community events, helping with simple needs (grocery shopping) or sharing cultural traditions.
