HSAS members back at work

Health union members are back at work after a day of job action in Prince Albert.

Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS) officials have agreed to meet with Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO), the organization representing health employers, this morning at 10.

“We are meeting with SAHO. They’ve asked us to come back and listen to them, so we’re going to come back and listen,” said Cathy Dickson, HSAS president.

While the union plans on listening to what the employer has to say, it may not change their plans for more job action, Dickson said.

“We’re just going to go ahead with our plan as planned and we’re not going to alter our plan just because SAHO wants to talk to us. So we’ll see what they have to say, but we decided that we are not going to give details on whether we are going to take more job action or not,” she said.

About 60 union members in the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region picketed outside the addictions services building on 15th Street East, Monday.

This was the first job action taken by the union in the province and it was successful, said Dickson.

“I think the first day of striking was extremely successful, we had a lot of support from the community, people driving by and honking and waving and showing a lot of support that way,” she said.

Along with media interest, Dickson said they had officials from other unions bring coffee and words of encouragement. Members of the public stopped by to talk to them as well.

“It was actually kind of a fun day all around,” Dickson said.

Member stayed on the picket line from about 8 a.m. to just before 2 p.m.

The question of further job action will be discussed after the meeting with SAHO, today.
