THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAF ARID PATTERN (CAMO JERSEY):
A SILENT AUCTION AT MATHESON’S MEN’S WEAR

For the last six years Riverside and Westview Community Schools, with St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church have raised money together to sponsor children and youth from our community to attend summer camp. This year we are hoping to sponsor and send 110 kids to camp. We need to raise $12,500.00 to cover the costs of sponsoring and sending young people to go to camp.

This past winter the Toronto Maple Leafs had twenty-five arid pattern (dessert cam) authentic hockey jerseys made in support of fundraising projects sponsored by chaplains in the Canadian Forces. Padre Sandy Scott, a chaplain in the reserve force Army and minister at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was given a jersey to raise money to send P.A. kids to camp. The jersey is on display at MATHESON’S MEN’S WEAR (1111 Central Ave.) and will be sold in a silent auction lasting from Monday, 02 May to Wednesday 15 June, 2011, to the highest bidder. All proceeds will be used to help send a young person to camp.

In a community like Prince Albert, where a quarter of the population is under the age of 18 sending kids to camp is an important project. The young people who participate would not have the chance to go to camp if we did not help them.

Helping kids go to camp means more than paying camping fees: for some children and families we provide transportation to and from camp; we lend out sleeping bags and other expensive necessities; and every camper we sponsor receives a “camp kit” which has sun screen, insect repellent, a cap, a face cloth, and other important camping items.

Our commitment to support young people who want to go to camp means we do all we can to break down barriers that would keep them from taking part in the camping experience.

We know that the camping experience can have a lasting and positive effect on the well-being and self-esteem of a young person. Camping helps create some of childhood’s best memories and important life lessons.

The demand for this program has grown quickly over the last few years because teachers, parents and others see the lasting positive effect camping has on a child. Children and youth are sponsored to go to camps in the Prince Albert area, most going to Camp Christopher, but also other camps including music and sports camps.

The only stipulation is that the camp must be registered with the Saskatchewan Camping Association.

This year we are asking individuals, families and businesses to sponsor Elizabeth Moar and Rev. Dr. Sandy Scott in a “Tri-athalon”. On Thursday June 16, Elizabeth and Sandy will start with a one kilometer swim at Sandy Lake (south end of P.A. National Park), then they will ride 70 km, and run 10 km into Prince Albert, finishing their “Tri” at Riverside Community School at noon.

If you would like to sponsor Sandy or Elizabeth, donate to this project or want more information please contact Sandy Scott at 961-4471.
