Northern leaders set to gather for economic summit

Political and economic leaders are set to descend on La Ronge to hammer out the future prospects for northern Saskatchewan.

They’re gathering for the Northern Economic Summit. It’s a meeting designed to use all the data and information gathered in recent years and turn it into action.

“There’s been a lot of research, reports and analysis done historically and it’s stopped right there—it hasn’t been taken to that next step,” said Bryce Foix, CEO of the Churchill River Enterprise Region and one of the organizers.

“This is basically an action forum. We’re looking to take the a lot of the work that’s been done, get the input from northern leadership and to see what’s going to move and who’s going to step up to the plate.”

Foix said the so many things are coming together in the north that makes a summit imperative.

“We have such abundant resources, we have a potential labour pool to tap into, opportunity to get aboriginals, First Nations, Metis and other northerners involved and we can look at expanding current businesses and look many opportunities getting involved in that value chain,” he said.

The summit takes places on May 12 and 13 and tackles many issues. More information is available at the summit’s website.
