GALLERY EDUCATOR
Reporting to the Director / Curator, the Educator designs, organizes, implements and evaluates all aspects of education and public programming activities in collaboration with the permanent and part time staff and volunteers of the Mann Art Gallery (“MAG”).
Duties:
Educational Programming:
Develop, schedule and perform in-house curriculum based interpretive tours related to current exhibition programming.
Concentrate on developing outreach programming for senior citizens and rural schools in the southeast district through community public programming, such as community art classes, workshops, summer camps etc.
Obtain funding for school tours and public programming through community and regional based grants including all related aspects of such grants (ie. follow-up reports).
Obtain funding through provincial or federal grants related to education and public programming in collaboration with the Director / Curator including all related aspects of such grants (ie. follow-up reports).
Abide by the Workshops and Classes portion of the MAG Budget as outlined by the Director / Curator and the Board of Directors of the MAG.
Maintain knowledge of current educational methodology and practices to accommodate other educator's and institution's special needs.
Supervise and train Summer Student Staff, Interns and Volunteers as required by the Director / Curator.
Exhibitions and Facility:
Assist in the set up and take down of Contemporary Art exhibitions and care of exhibits while on display and play an active role in the ongoing development, design and research of the exhibits in the Permanent Collection.
Follow and execute maintenance of high standards for physical (handling, storage, shipping) and environmental (temperature and humidity control) requirements and supervise these standards in the daily activities of Summer Student, Interns and volunteers.
Maintain stock and educational supplies.
Maintain general upkeep and tidiness of the education facility including tables and chairs, sinks, and storage spaces.
Clerical:
Generate or supervise the development and distribution of displays, brochures, posters and other creative vehicles related to Educational activities and maintain stock and storage of education supplies.
Advise the Director / Curator of special requirements in materials, facilities or issues arising in daily responsibilities through monthly reports (including summer reports). Outline activities performed and key success measures pertaining to the educational programs and activities of the MAG.
Support and abide by all public relations material affecting the gallery including the MAG image, advertisements, interviews, and affairs relating to the Art Gallery's educational programming and initiatives.
Support the Director / Curator in facility rental by community groups including some administrative duties and general upkeep of the Education Room in accordance with the MAG Policies and Procedures.
Continue to maintain filing systems and education resources.
Provide administrative support to the Director / Curator as required.
NOTE: Other duties / tasks relevant to the activities of the MAG may be assigned by the Director / Curator from time to time, but these duties must not contribute to a continued and significant increase to the responsibilities of the Educator position contributing to accumulated overtime and they must not be out of the scope of abilities for this position.
Public Relations:
Represent the Gallery at community events (fairs, festivals, receptions, centennials etc) and act as a liaison between schools, media and the community regarding all education related programming offered at the MAG.
Maintain liaisons with other educational groups and peer professional organizations and engage in Professional Development opportunities as required or directed by the Director / Curator.
A Bachelor Degree in Arts or Fine Arts with specialization in Art History, Education, Studio Arts or equivalent education, training and experience related to the visual arts and history.
Experience & Knowledge requirements:
One year of previous art education (or relative) experience including organization of art related programming.
Awareness of funding agencies / organizations.
Awareness of art and craft techniques and materials.
Demonstration of interest and involvement in the arts.
Strength and mobility to perform required physical activities.
Experience working with seniors and children is an asset.
Experience in writing grant applications is an asset.
Experience in management and/or supervision is an asset.
