P.A. Zellers misses the ‘Target’

May 29, 2011 | 8:36 AM

The Zellers store in Prince Albert will continue to operate under the same name, but its future remains uncertain.

The Target Corporation announced on Thursday the first 105 Zellers locations that will be converted into Target stores by 2013. Prince Albert was left off that list.

The U.S. retail chain made its move into Canada when it acquired the leases for 220 Zellers locations earlier this year for $1.825 billion.

Regina’s Northgate Mall and the Centre Mall in Saskatoon were the only Saskatchewan locations on the initial list.

“We have no news to report on the Prince Albert store,” said Molly Schneider, spokeswoman for the Target Corporation.

“There are 115 sites that we did not make any announcement about and we anticipate updating our Canadian guests and friends later this year,” she said, adding that the announcement would happen this fall.

They can choose up to 220 of the 275 locations, said Hudson Bay spokeswoman Freda Colborne.

We have no idea what locations they will choose next Colborne said.

Zellers will continue to operate in Canada, but with fewer locations Schneider said.

“We just acquired the ability to move into up to 220 of their store locations, so Zellers continues to plan to run their business,” she said.

Target said it will invest about $10 million in remodeling each location and will engage with Zellers associates to make it easy for them to apply for jobs at Target.
