Young bears spotted in Prince Albert

Conservation officers in the Prince Albert area are searching for three young orphans.

The bear cubs were spotted this morning in the city's northwestern limits. This was the same area where a mother black bear was shot two weeks ago.

“We were just coming into town and we came around the corner and three of them ran across the road right in front of us. They kind of stopped at the side of the road and were staring at us,” said Brandon Detillieux, a local resident.

“They're quite small. I don't think they'll survive if they are not caught.”

An attempt to catch and tranquilize the cubs this morning was unsuccessful, said Conservation Officer Bonnie Greene.

Officers do think that these are the cubs are from the mother that was shot earlier this month, she said.

“The fact that they have survived so far for two weeks is definitely a positive sign that they are managing on their own,” she said.

Greene said traps have been put out and patrols will continue for the young bears.
