HORSES HELPING PEOPLE LEARN TO HELP THEMSELVES
(One Arrow First Nation) For the past 16 weeks more than 50 members from the One Arrow First Nation participated in Inspire Direction Equine Assisted Learning (I.D.E.A.L) Program.

EAL (equine assisted learning) provides participants with a hands-on opportunity to work with a horse (no riding) to develop healthy relationships, communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership and other life skills.

A grand opening of the One Arrow Equestrian Centre will take place at 11 am, Thursday June 9, 2011 on the One Arrow First Nation, approximately 17 km east of Rosthern along highway 312.

Following the grand opening participants and their horses will be demonstrating new skills learned from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

One Arrow First Nation Chief and Council invested in this program as a culturally relevant way to empower people in their community to make positive life changes. “We need to help all our youth and community members to be strong, confident and capable people that can be leaders today and tomorrow,” stated Chief Dwayne Paul.

“Seeing the participants transform throughout their 16 week journey has been remarkable, we are excited to be developing a qualitative and quantitative research project with researchers from Brandon University to capture the individual and community benefits of our program” says Lawrence Gaudry, Executive Director for One Arrow Equestrian Centre.

“The I.D.E.A.L programs’ activities require the participant or group to apply certain life and social skills to tasks involving the horses. Working with horses requires a person to be their authentic self. Horses provide immediate, non judgmental and honest feedback,” said Koralie Gaudry, Program Director for One Arrow Equestrian Centre’s I.D.E.A.L program.

“This is an effective education and mental health service. The horses provide a metaphor for our own lives, the insight gained about one’s self in the arena can be applied to our daily lives. Participants get a chance to practice and apply new skills learned in a safe and fun environment before transferring into everyday life.”

One Arrow Equestrian Centre’s staff is certified by a national recognized academy, Cartier’s Equine Learning Centre, which provides education, standards, innovation, and support to professionals providing services in Equine Assisted Learning around the world.
