Postal strike delivered to Saskatchewan

Jun 13, 2011 | 6:23 AM

Another week begins and there is still no end in sight to the postal strike.

The union began rotating walkouts over a week ago. Postal workers in Regina went on a 24 hour strike last night at 8. So far there is no word on any strikes in Prince Albert.

“Right now it's basically I get an email daily on it, probably a couple hours before the media knows.

They have to keep it under wraps because they don't want any leakages to the corporations,” said local union vice-president Mark McCaul.

Negotiations continue between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, but there is no sign of a settlement. Some of the main sticking points remain sick leave, pensions, and safety.

“Our work loads are getting bigger, heavier and longer. They're telling the public that our mail volumes are dropping, but not once have they told the public what kind of profits they have been making over the past 15 years,” McCaul said.

Canada Post is trimming staff levels at mail sorting plants and starting this week, letter carriers will only deliver the mail three days a week — Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

“A lot of people might think three days a week is fine, but you count on businesses that need your mail every day. You count on not just small business, but large businesses and pensioners. We can't forget about those people,” said McCaul.

McCaul said the corporation is breaking several federal laws by imposing the three day week mail delivery.
