Debate ends on development funding

Jun 15, 2011 | 6:31 AM

After almost six months of debate, city council has finally decided how it will divvy up a chunk of funding for community development.

The city is in a five-year agreement with the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation to hand out $200,000 to various community organizations around the city.

On Monday council agreed to hand out the money to six organizations including the Rotary Trail, the Prince Albert Women of the Earth, the Bernice Sayese Centre, the Parkland Group and the Crescent Heights Community Club.

The recipients were pared down from many applications that were received several months ago. For several council meetings council had been debating which the best projects were to receive the money.

The debate went back and forth as councillors kept loyalties to their wards and to organizations they favoured one way or another.

Coun. Lee Atkinson said he didn’t like the procedure and that something needed to be changed.

“We went through this strange, convoluted process, we voted on six top items then there was some mathematical formula and now we come up with this list,” he said.

Whether or not something will be changed is a debate that will have to take place next year.

In the meantime the organizations chosen will receive a share of the funding and use it for various projects.
