Wet conditions at Prince Albert National Park

Prince Albert National Park hasn’t avoided the rain that has fallen across the province making hiking trails muddy and raising lake water levels.

While the water won’t affect many areas in the park, some of the trails are wet, said Pat Dunn with the national park.

“There are lots of muddy sections, lots of wet trails, but they’re passable, with the exception of the North Freight trail, which has a flooded section right now,” Dunn said.

People looking to head out on a hike can check out the trail report online, she said.

It isn’t just the trails that have been affected by the heavy rains, Dunn said the beaches are smaller because water levels have risen.

“The only beach that’s really affected is the Trippes Beach and picnic area, as the water has really come up there, so probably not as sandy and nice as it normally is,” said Dunn.

The main beach at Waskesiu is fine, as are all the campsites, she said.

Dunn couldn’t say whether the recent rain has affected the number of people coming out to camp, as it isn’t the busy season yet. However, she is hoping for a turnaround in the weather before it gets more people want to use the park.

“It sure would be nice to get some sun, dry things off a bit and have the place all perfect for summer.”
