Year Report by YWCA Executive Director – Donna Brooks
It’s the time of year when I reflect on the past 12 months and try to fit all the highlights onto one page. That can be somewhat challenging considering all that is happening at the YWCA! The past year saw us start two new programs – the Regional Newcomer Centre and the Settlement Workers in Schools program. We have also been working towards opening a third Youth Peer Support Home for teen moms and babies.
We have made significant strides in the area of girls programming and getting young women involved with the YWCA. Our second annual Power of Being a Girl Conference was held in Prince Albert on October 23, 2010 and we have partnered with the Kelsey Trail Health Region to help bring the event to the Melfort/Nipawin/Tisdale region in May 2011. Ashley McLean (Settlement Services Manager) has been selected as a delegate and will represent the YWCA Canada as a young woman at World Council in Zurich Switzerland in July, 2011.
Paulette Senior, CEO, YWCA Canada paid a visit to Prince Albert on January 27, 2011. This was the first time Paulette had been to P.A. and I was honored to show her around. She was impressed with all the different things we do here at the Y. In addition to visiting all the facilities, the youth drum group performed an honor song for her and we had a social so everyone could meet and mingle with Paulette.
Another area that we have been focusing on is PR, Marketing and Branding. A PR committee has been established and is working on plans for our centennial in 2012. We have been working towards redesigning and updating our website.
