No camping at Craven Country Jamboree

The 2011 Craven Country Jamboree will not have on-site camping as Fisheries and Oceans Canada has stopped pumping water out of the site because of a concern for fish living in the flooded campground.

Craven Country Jamboree Director of Communications Kim Blevins says Fisheries and Oceans turned off their four pumps on Monday.

“It is a surprise to us that Monday night they shut us down,” said Blevins adding that the festival hasn't been given a clear reason why worked was stopped.

“It has to do with the fish that are on the site and whether or not they would survive,” said Blevins.

A post on the Craven Country Jamboree Facebook page highlights the festival's shock following Fisheries and Oceans Canada's decision.

“They participated in the entire process from the proposal to build the dikes, to the building of the dikes, and even seeing the pumps set up and ready to go. They are concerned about the fish that are currently on the site and if they would survive the dewatering. Even though we had a fish rescue plan in place. It is a surprise to us.”

Meanwhile, Blevins says they are trying to organize a solution.

“We do have an alternate campsite we are working on right now,” said Blevins. “We’ve been looking at several different places but until we have all the “i”s dotted and the “t”s crossed, I don’t want to get into any specifics.”
