UPDATE: Search ends in tragedy

Jun 29, 2011 | 1:49 PM

The body of a missing 22-year-old male has been found at the scene of a quad accident in the Rural Municipality of Buckland.

RCMP are continuing to investigate the death and are not releasing the name of the deceased at this time.

The body was found by some civilian searchers on near the bank of the North Saskatchewan River about two miles from the residence where he was last seen.

The search for the five-foot-10, 160-pound Caucasian man began at 8 a.m. today after he was reported missing 9:30 Tuesday night.

When someone is reported missing, RCMP first makes inquiries to try and determine if there are friends or associated in the area that the missing person could be with and after that, they start a search in daylight hours.

“There are a number of agencies that become involved,” said Sgt. John Mansbridge, with Prince Albert RCMP.

Civilian searchers, Prince Albert RCMP, Buckland Fire and Rescue, and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) were all involved, he said.

“Buckland fire volunteers that provided quite a bit of manpower.”

The searchers used vehicles to check grid roads, looking for signs of the quad or someone walking out.

The aerial search with CASARA was called in because RCMP didn’t know what direction the man travelled in, Mansbridge said.

The male left a private residence on a 2010 yellow and black 650 cc Bombardier quad at between 11 p.m. Monday night and 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The residence is located approximately 11 kilometres outside of the Prince Albert city limits.
