Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan are trying to develop stronger strains of wheat by looking at the grass' genetic makeup.
The provincial government announced a contribution of $1.5 million to the three-year project.
Dr. Curtis Pozniak, one of the projects lead researchers, said the research will be beneficial to western wheat growers.
“The main goal of the project, of course, is to sequence and understand all of the genes that are in the genome and how they contribute to traits that are important for western Canadian farmers,” said Pozniak.
