Another case of C.difficile at Victoria Hospital

There is another case of Clostridium difficile at Victoria Hospital, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in this latest outbreak to six.

There is some good news though, some of those patients have been sent home after being symptom free for more than 72 hours.

“Three of the six patients have been discharged, it means we feel it is safe for them to go home,” said Doug Dahl, communications officer with the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.

When being discharged these patients are being reminded of what the symptoms are and how to prevent C. difficile from spreading, Dahl said.

As of Monday morning there were two new suspected cases of the bacteria, that causes diarrhea, fever, nausea and abdominal pain.

“We are always concerned when there are new cases, we are again taking precautions to reduce the risk of spreading it,” Dahl said.

Visitor restrictions remain in place for the surgical unit, level four, of Victoria Hospital. Only immediate family members with permission are able to visit patients on that floor.

Health officials are still asking people to be caution when entering isolated rooms and use good infection control practices such as hand washing with soap and water.

Along with keep their eyes open for new cases of C. difficile, health workers are investigating two cases that screened negative last week.

“There were some suspected cases last week that came back negative for C. diff, we are continuing to investigate to figure out what else they might be,” Dahl said.
