Opposition party disappointed by Sask. government housing strategy

The Saskatchewan government has revealed an eight-year strategy to address housing strategy intended to improve both the rental and buyers’ market in Saskatchewan, with a focus on increasing housing supply and affordability in the first year.

But the opposition says it's not enough.

NDP housing critic David Forbes calls the 46-page strategy disappointing.

“There are no new programs, whether it’s home improvements or rent programs – there is nothing about second generation rent controls,” said Forbes.

“I am deeply concerned.”

But Shawn Fraser with the Carmichael Outreach Centre is pleased to see the government taking housing seriously.

“In Regina we have the lowest vacancy rate in Saskatchewan,” said Fraser.

“It really is crisis mode for the people we serve at Carmichael Outreach.”

The government is calling the strategy a “road map” and a strong foundation to an improved housing situation in Saskatchewan.
