A mile for Paige … and desserts for a good cause

Lisa Evans wanted to do something for her nine-year-old goddaughter who is undergoing treatment for a tumour.

She said she realized no matter how much she wanted something different for her friend’s family — she couldn’t make the tumour go away.

“But what I could do, is do what I do best, in terms of relieving stress and that is run and eat chocolate and that is where the idea came forward,” Evans said.

The event was held Monday night in Little Red River Park and featured a one mile walk/run followed by desserts.

“Cheesecake and fudge and homemade brownies, and every form of gooey-brown chocolate desert you can think of. All with no calories because it’s for a good cause,” she said.

All funds raised in the Mile for Paige’s Smile will go to support the girl’s family during their six-week stay in Edmonton while Paige undergoes chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Paige developed a brain tumour this spring, which was removed and she bounced back well from her first surgery and finished Grade 3, said Evans.

However the headaches returned earlier in the summer. Another MRI revealed the tumour had come back aggressively.

Paige usually lives in Regina with her family and sisters, but the family plans to stay together for treatment, said Evans.

“They decided that they’ve made it this far as a family, they’re going to stay together as a family and stay in Edmonton until Paige is done all of her treatments,” she said.

“They just thought it would be better for everybody if they just stayed together.”

Evans said she plans to send photos to the family, to show her how many people are thinking of her and how people are on her side as she battles the cancer.

“The energy of the run, I’m hoping is going to go forward to letting them know how much people are behind them, how much we love them and wish them well,” she said.
