Jobs could be on the line for Roughriders

Aug 16, 2011 | 4:46 PM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders departed Regina on Tuesday afternoon on what could be the final road trip for some on board that flight to Toronto.

Changes are on the horizon in Saskatchewan after a 1-6 start and the performance of individuals this week could decide whether or not they're still employed by the Roughriders when they return to work following the upcoming bye week.

“Whether we're going into the bye week or not, I think guys realize the importance of us getting this turned,” explained head coach Greg Marshall before the team departed to Ontario, “As I saw a comment from Barrin (Simpson) yesterday, it doesn't matter what profession you're in. If you're not performing well at your job then people look to make some changes.”

Trying to stay positive

With the reality of possible change coming, the players are staying confident the current group can turn around the season.

“It's no different than it was at the beginning of the season. We're still upbeat. We're still a confident bunch. There's really been no blowouts this year so we know that we can compete. We just have to finish games and cut down the mistakes,” said quarterback Darian Durant.

The fact the team is in their second three-game losing streak of the season is starting to impact that confident demeanour.

“In this business, it's a bad situation when you're losing,” stated defensive back Lance Frazier, “Everybody is down on you. Everybody is looking for somebody to replace you. That's just the nature of it. If you haven't been accountable and you haven't been doing your job and you're the guy that's replaced then so be it.”

Believe

The belief in each other and in themselves will be key for the team to come out of the break and start climbing the standings before the playoffs.

“If you don't believe in yourself and you don't believe in what you're doing, you're done,” exclaimed Marshall.

However, the coach makes it simple on how the team will decide on who stays and who goes if changes are deemed necessary.

“If certain guys aren't performing well, they need to be concerned. If they are playing well they're not as concerned.”
