Rivier welcomes a handful of boys

Rivier Academy is ready for a big change.

As the school year kicks off in the next two weeks, the formerly all-girl school will get a boost of testosterone.

There are three boys enrolled, said Lorel Trumier, director of education for the Prince Albert Roman Catholic Separate School Division.

It brings total enrolment to 146, with a few applications still pending — it’s a slight increase from last year’s 144 students.

“It’s exactly what we were expecting, perhaps an opportunity for students to come forward and try it out and it gave parents another opportunity to have another option,” she said.

The school division was ready for a slow influx of boys and have not had many inquiries yet. It’s something she said she hopes will start to pick up in the near future.

For now it’s a waiting game. As word of mouth spreads, they expect male enrolment to increase, she said adding all it should take is one successful school year.

The school has been an all-girl facility for decades and people need to realize there has been a change, Trumier said.

As time goes on they will make adjustments, and while the number of boys attending is minimal they know what they are getting into, she said.

“I think the students that will be attending have made that decision with their parents and they will be moving confidently into the next year, they wouldn’t have proceeded with that application if they didn’t,” Trumier said.

“Sr. Mary (the principal) does a great job. She meets with all of the families and the students personally to help them in their questions or concerns that they may have.”

As time goes on, she said she expects the numbers to start evening out.

“It’s been so long that it’s been a girl school,” she said.
