Police roll out new decals

Nov 9, 2011 | 8:38 AM

It’s bolder and brighter and designed to make sure people can see the Prince Albert Police Service vehicles.

“It’s more visible, primarily that’s what we’re looking for is a higher visibility at night and they’re a more reflective decal package,” said Sgt. Kelly McLean, media spokesman with Prince Albert police.

A new decaling package for the cars has been unveiled and the word police is bigger and has higher visibility than the old designs. People will really see the full effect at night, McLean said.

The first car with the new look is a 2012 Dodge Charger, the first of four new vehicles that are set to be replaced this year.

The graphics used on the exterior of the vehicle are developed within provincial guidelines and with the input of Prince Albert Police Service members, said McLean. Other municipal police agencies have, or will be, adopting similar changes.

While the new decaling is going on all the new vehicles, the service hasn’t decided if they will update the decals on vehicles that are already in service.

“We’re going to do these new ones first and then we’re going to have a look at the service life, what’s left in the old vehicles. There’s a very good possibility that we may re-decal a couple of the cars that only have a year service in,” McLean said.

Once the new decals are on the vehicles they will be on for the life of the car and won’t require fixing unless there is a major accident, he said.

The change is part of a growing trend towards more reflective decaling of emergency services vehicles. Parkland Ambulance began this with their new ambulances about three years go.
