Renowned Saskatoon diner comes under new ownership

Aug 30, 2014 | 2:18 PM

Mel's Diner on 11 Street West has developed a reputation among locals for its huge portions, low prices, and homey atmosphere.

Mel's is the place where you can get a giant, filling breakfast for $7.15.

If you're somehow still hungry after that, a half-pound cheeseburger with a side for lunch will only cost you another for $6.50.

“The idea is to feed everybody — put a smile on their face and you know, still not rob them,” owner and operator Mylinda Isaac said. “They still have money in their wallet after they leave and they're happy.”

Now, after more than 14 years of feeding Saskatoon, Isaac is retiring. Mel's Diner has been sold to a young couple from Vietnam, who Isaac will be training for the next two weeks.

But despite a new name, (Ling's Diner,) Isaac said much of what made the restaurant so beloved will remain. The menu will stay the same, though a few Vietnamese dishes will be added.

The prices will go up though.

“I saw the new menu, and things went up by roughly 50 cents, which I think you'll agree is not unreasonable,” Isaac said. “My prices were very low in the first place.”

Saturday will mark the last day of operation under the old ownership. Isaac has marked her departure by serving up complementary cake and buying meals for her “vast” cadre of regular customers.

“So many well wishes, so many,” Isaac said. “You know 'sorry to see you go', 'thank you for serving me for so many years.'

He said everyone is a little disappointed, but they're very happy for him.

Getting to know the people of Saskatoon, Isaac said, has been one of the highlights of owning Mel's Diner.

“It's like the old boys club; on any given day you can come in, and pretty much half of the people know the other half of the people.”

“I would just like to say thank you to Saskatoon for being great people and supporting me,” Isaac added, “it's been a really good run.”
