Weyburn abuzz about Graham DeLaet’s success

The City of Weyburn wants Graham DeLaet to know his hometown is proud of his accomplishments.

DeLaet and other PGA Tour golfers are resting up this week before finishing the Fed Ex Cup playoffs.

In the opening two tournaments, he finished with a tie for second and a third place finish. That has propelled him to a spot on the President’s Cup International team.

Weyburn is proud to call DeLaet a hometown boy, said Rob Stephanson, councillor for the City of Weyburn.

“Even though he has achieved this success and is doing so well on a personal level, he still remains Graham DeLaet: local Weyburn boy,” he said.

“He doesn’t get to Weyburn as much as he used to. That’s understandable. He’s playing a lot of golf and doing very well at it.”

The Weyburn Golf Club has a sign at its Highway 39 entrance that reads “The home course of Graham DeLaet.” Last year while DeLaet was home for the hospital foundation’s tournament, the road leading to the clubhouse was named Graham DeLaet Drive.

Stephanson said the golf course workers keep a close eye on DeLaet’s tournament play, as do the golfers on the course.

DeLaet’s success is also encouraging young golfers to pursue the same path, he said.

“I think it’s just a sign of things to come for Canadian golf,” he added.

“It sends a chill up your spine that’s just heart publicity—it’s not even the publicity—it’s just the pride that you have because he does represent us so well,” Stephanson said, adding he’s a great Canadian ambassador.

Stephanson said he believes DeLaet has a good chance of winning the playoffs and collect $10 million.
