Former chief sets sights on third term

After a two-year absence from politics, Darrell McCallum is tossing his hat back in the ring.

McCallum is one of three people vying for the position of chief in the upcoming Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation election on April 14.

McCallum served two terms as chief from 2007 to 2013, but bowed out in the last election.

“I got nominated and then withdrew my nomination and I told all the membership at that time that I was going to step down to deal with myself and also remind people that I would be coming back bigger, better and stronger,” he said.

McCallum’s younger brother died less than two months before the election, and McCallum was also dealing with some other family issues.

When asked why now, McCallum said he had received a lot of support recently from both elders and youth.

“I’m actually very overwhelmed by the amount of people who have been talking to me, urging me on,” said McCallum.

McCallum promises that if he is elected, he would continue work on projects that will help the band become more self-sustaining, such as the Petro Canada gas stations in Prince Albert and Creighton.

He said the projects were a way to create wealth so band members could start building their own homes, as opposed to waiting on funding from Aboriginal and Northern Development Canada.

Another item on McCallum’s to-do list is drafting a new band constitution and creating a band-wide community strategy.

“You have to start looking at every program area in terms of what’s provided through treaty rights and also looking at what programs are in each community,” said McCallum.

McCallum said he has really missed the political realm and is anxious to get back to work.

“I created a very strong voice and a very strong political agenda for the membership; and I truly believe we had vision and we were moving forward and as a chief I will continue to do so,” said McCallum.

The other chief candidates in this election are incumbent Peter Beatty and Karen Bird from Southend.
