UPDATE: RCMP, foster mom testify on day 3 of Lee Bonneau inquest

Apr 8, 2015 | 12:57 PM

Crime scene photos were shown to jurors by an RCMP officer on day three at the inquest into the death of six-year-old Lee Bonneau.

Bonneau died at the hands of a 10-year-old boy in late August 2013 on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation near Broadview. The older boy was receiving services while in the care of his family. Bonneau was in foster care.

Cst. Mark Dijkstra testified that Lee was found badly beaten in the face with a three-foot long stick found at the scene with blood on it.  Lee was at Kahkewistahaw First Nation with his foster mother, who was visiting to play bingo.

He said a lot of people were crying and standing around Lee, who was alive when he was first found. He died on the way to hospital.

Next up to testify was Lee’s foster mother, Mary Ramstead. She says she is still haunted by the memory of Lee’s pain from the beating.

Lee had been in her care for only a few weeks when he was killed. Ramstead said he was mischievious, but liked to be babied.

The inquest is hearing from Thomas Alexson, who found Bonneau after the beating. He held the boy’s hand until he was put into an ambulance.

Earlier in the inquest, which began in Regina at Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday, jurors heard from the parents of Lee as well as the Social Services employee in charge of his file at the time of the boy’s death.

A jury of six is hearing witnesses over the next two weeks. Jurors were chosen not to find fault, but to figure out how Lee died and to help educate the public. They’re tasked with seeking out facts which will be developed into a set of recommendations to avoid any future tragedies such as Bonneau’s.
