Co-Op celebrates 75 years in P.A.

Apr 10, 2015 | 12:18 PM

With 75 years now under its belt, Prince Albert Co-Op is giving back to more than just its equity-holders.

Prince Albert Co-Op started in 1940 and has since expanded to 10 branches spanning from the city out to Wakaw, Shellbrook, Marcelin, Shellbrook, and “every point in between,” said Dave Marchant, Prince Albert Co-Op’s general manager.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Prince Albert Co-Op is giving a $75,000 boost to its usual $200,000 annual donations to community groups. That extra dollar value’s connection to the 75th anniversary was no coincidence, Marchant says.

All proceeds from an upcoming Gord Bamford concert hosted by Co-Op will go towards that $75,000. If the Art Hauser Centre event on June 10 sells out, they’ll reach that goal, Marchant said.

“He’s an awesome, country award-winning Canadian star,” plus the event will be a great chance for Co-Op members to meet staff, Marchant said.

When asked what makes Co-Op different from other businesses, Marchant pointed out multiple Co-Op openings in recent years – for example the reopened Co-Op on Second Avenue West, which cost more than $6 million.

“We reinvest where we do business,” he said.

Marchant said he values everyone involved with Co-Op – from the management team, to great staff, but also “great customers that look after us.”

One added benefit to becoming a member of Prince Albert Co-Op is the money that comes back to equity-holders based on their purchases at Co-Op each year.

The cheques in the mail this time around are a total of $2.5 million, Marchant said.

This year holds many milestones for Marchant. He’s been in his role in Prince Albert for 10 years, with the company for 35, and he’s retiring in less than a month.

“Alls I know is there’s 23 more days ‘til fishing season, I don’t know how many days until retirement,” he said in a lighthearted manner, adding that his last day is May 1.

“I’ve been very fortunate to be chosen to do what I do,” he said.

Customers have a few incentives over the next little while.

On Friday and Saturday Co-Op is handing out double scratch and save tokens that give a minimum of 10 per cent off almost everything. This includes almost everything from gas, to food, to lumber.

On April 13 Co-Op will draw to see who’s won a quad side-by-side RZR all-terrain vehicle.

Finally, the Gord Bamford concert on June 10 will cap off “a very busy eight weeks for us,” Marchant said, adding “we’re very excited and I hope everybody else will be too.”

Prince Albert Co-Ops are 10 of more than 200 in Western Canada.

“We’re just one of the many but saleswise we’re the fifth largest in Western Canada,” Marchant said.

Prince Albert Co-Op will have $250 million in sales this year and employs more than 450 people.
